NHL Awards for Attack Alumni ?

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The National Hockey League Awards will be presented on Wednesday at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The 2019 awards will garner plenty of attention from an Owen Sound standpoint.

Defenceman Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames who played 2 season for the Owen Sound Attack is a finalist for both the James Norris Trophy as the top defenceman in the NHL and for the Mark Messier Award for Leadership & Community Activities.

Remarkably, another Attack alumni, Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers/Nashville Predators, is also among the 3 candidates for the Messier Award.

The 3 nominees for the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year include former Attack Goalie, Jordan Binnington who spent 4 years with the Attack and holds the franchise record for career victories by a netminder.

Most people suggest Elias Pettersson of Vancouver will win the Rookie of the Year award, but based on Binnington, or " Winnington's ", run with the St Louis Blues, should he ?

Along with Giordano, Simmonds & Binnington who played for Owen Sound, there are numerous NHL Award finalists who played here against the Platers and the Attack as Juniors.

Brent Burns for Brampton.

Justin Williams, Plymouth.

Patrick Kane, London

Nick Foligno, Sudbury

Sean Monahan, Ottawa

& Joe Thornton of the Soo Greyhounds.

Plus 3 other OHL grads are up for honours in 2 different categories

Goalie Robin Lehner who played for the Soo plus Erie Otter grads Ryan O'Reilly & Connor McDavid could double up on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

That's a prominent list of guys who either played for, or played in, Owen Sound at one point or another in time.

I'm Fred Wallace
