Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The Canadian Junior Men's Fastball Tournament begins today in St Leonard-d'Aston, Quebec.
The Owen Sound Selects are competing in the 8 team tournament and will play their opening game this afternoon against the Kevin Quinn Ravens from Prince Edward Island.
The Preliminary Round is a true round robin, so Owen Sound will meet each of the other 7 teams head to head and then on Saturday the playoff round will commence.
The Selects are " Ontario 3 ", and thus are seeded lower than their provincial rivals the Cobourg Bulls & Tavistock Hops, so it will be interesting to see if Owen Sound can emerge at the top come Sunday.
The interesting aspect is that win or lose, the Selects will be right back on the diamond only days later at the World's biggest event, the ISC Championships which are being hosted in Kitchener this year.
Owen Sound will begin play at the Worlds August 9th playing in the Red Division with New Hamburg, Alvinston & Niagara Falls and again hoping to pitch and hit their way to the title.
And if that's not enough fastball, several members of the Junior Selects will also be competing for Men's teams in the ISC Championship Tournament.
Luke Zettel for example, could find himself in the Championship Round with the Junior Selects Sunday in Quebec.
The following Saturday, he'll play for The Lakes of Fenelon Falls in their ISC tournament debut against the Irma Tigers from Alberta.
And while it's a bit of a longshot, Zettel could find himself playing for the Junior Selects Thursday August 9th in their opener against New Hamburg and then later against Niagara Falls, PLUS hit the field again later that night for a key game for The Lakes of Fenelon Falls.
