Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Today has a " weekend " feel to it....probably because it's March Break in these parts.
I'm not that old that I don't remember how exciting it was on the Monday of March Break knowing you could sleep late, and you had the better part of 7 great days of NO SCHOOL in front of you.
Among the interesting sporting activities I see this week for high school aged students is a significant hockey game for the Grey Bruce Minor Midget Highlanders tomorrow afternoon.
The " AAA " Highlanders, at every level, toil away in relative obscurity either playing road games far away or home games scattered around our region.
I watched a Major Atom game this year in Durham, and to put it in perspective, the previous game I saw had a young Brett Mckenzie, now an overage with the Attack, playing for the Oakville Ranger Minor Midgets.
In the case of the current Minor Midget squad, they got our attention last month when they advanced to the SCTA Championship Series against Oakville.
Most recently, they defeated Brampton for the right to play tomorrow in an OHL Cup Wild Card game.
The OHL Cup is the March Madness of Minor Midget Hockey, both a Championship and a future showcase all rolled into one.
For the Highlanders to advance to the OHL Cup, they MUST beat the Mississauga Rebels tomorrow afternoon in a showdown game at 4 pm.
If Grey-Bruce loses, they're OUT.
If the Highlanders win, then March Break for them will be spent competing against the best Minor Midget teams and players at the OHL Cup.
I'm Fred Wallace
