Super Bowl for Philadelphia...not New England
HI, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl on Sunday defeating the New England Patriots 41- 33 in a game that had a little bit of everything.
First, and most significantly, the Eagles won the Super Bowl for the first time ever.
Equally significant is who they beat; New England- a perennial contender and a multi time winner, referred to by some as the " Yankees " of their sport, a reference that conjures up the distaste for success New York has enjoyed at times in baseball.
It was notable that coach Doug Pederson and back up-cum starter Nick Foles were on the winning side, two less-than-ideal performers who managed to vanquish working legends Bill Belichick and Tom Brady leaving the critics to question the legends and not the underdogs.
After Brady failed to haul in a pass on a trick play for the Patriots early in the contest, Foles scored a touchdown on a similar gimmick for a key Eagles score later.
It wasn't all perfection, both kickers missed, but the drama it created was notable, far more notable than the NFL Championship game often produces.
In the end, the Philadelphia Eagles on a touchdown that needed video review followed by 2 defensive stands won Super Bowl 52.
Super Bowl 53.....February 3rd, 2019 in Atlanta.
