Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Julian Smith of Oxenden has been selected to represent Canada in the Euro B Nordic Tour in Switzerland and Germany next month.
The competition for Smith begins on February 5th and continues through the bulk of the month.
Smith resides at the National Training Development Centre in Thunder Bay these days, but his training and competitions take him all over the continent and, with this latest opportunity, all over the World.
In order to train fully and to compete to the best of his ability, Smith needs financial assistance...assistance to cover travel costs, lodging, race fees and any number of assorted expenses.
To that end, there are a couple of fundraisers on the Winter horizon designed to assist what I call " Julian's Journeys ".
The first activity to support the journey is NEXT Wednesday, the 31st, when the Sawmill Trails at Hepworth will host an informal moonlight ski or snowshoe which includes soup and hot chocolate sales from 6 - 7 pm.
The second event runs on the heels of the annual Georgian Bay Nordic Jack Rabbit Ski Day on Saturday February 24th.
After the Jack Rabbits have concluded their activities in the morning hours, the 4th annual "Soup for Julian" event will follow from 11 am- 2 pm.
Like other world class athletes from our region, Julian Smith toils far away from home- he has to. But in cases like the " Moonlight Ski " and " Soup for Julian ", I guarantee he's well aware of support at home.
