Ice Hawks Showcase, Northern Lights Lady Classic Tournament... and, of course, an Owen Sound Attack game
Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
A year ago, I spent a Sunday at the Ice Hawks Showcase watching every level of Owen Sound Girls Hockey stage a game at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.
It was a great Showcase, successful on every level.
But, with my Ryerson background, the natural reaction is to wonder how you can enhance an activity, even if it's very successful.
My thought a year ago was to have the Showcase staged on Saturday & tie it into an Owen Sound Attack home game that evening.
Remarkably, the Ice Hawks took the concept to heart and that's what we have this weekend.
Yes, there's a sequence of games in the Showcase featuring virtually every level of player in the Ice Hawk organization from Novice through Midget on Saturday, plus the Showcase will be sandwiched by the 1st ever Northern Lights Lady Classic tournament Friday through Sunday.
As I understand it, the Northern Lights Classic tournament has 4 Novice and 5 Atom aged teams.
Sure, it evolved out of some Ryerson-like thinking, but the weekend looks perfect to me with the Ice Hawks organization from top to bottom, a young girls 3 day tournament with teams from outside the city, the city ice pad facilities utilized and the local OHL team all weaved together.
I know it's Monday, but I'm excited for the weekend.
