Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
At the end of each calendar year we do a piece on what I consider to be the sporting event of the year.
The primary criteria for the designation in most cases is that I have to have seen the event first hand, in person.
For 2016, there's little doubt my highlight activity was the Canadian Bantam Fastball Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park which ran August 10th to the 14th.
The round robin which was a massive scramble to determine playoff placing was competitive and entertaining enough, but it paled in comparison to the events of Championship Sunday.
Having lost the night before to the KW Hallman Twins, the host Shallow Lake Sting were facing a long Sunday at the ball park, needing to run the table and go 4 & 0 on the day to take the title.
The early steps against Napanee with a wet ball were not inspiring, but the Sting found their range and posted a 7-1 victory.
Next, in an utter thriller, Tucker Firth of the Sting plated the winning run on a wild scamper home in a 1-0 win over Colchester Nova Scotia.
Up next was KW...again.
Trailing midway through the ball game, the Sting got some fielding breaks and seized the opportunity to win 6-2 and advance to the final.
And what a final !
Leading Warman Poly Plus 5-2, the Sting narrowly held on for a 5-4 victory and the Canadian crown.
I saw a lot of great sports moments in 2016, but the Shallow Lake Sting's Championship Sunday run on August 14th was the best of the best.
Happy New Year
