Bench Talk / Off The Wire

McNiven II

Fred

By Fred Wallace

Hi this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Since we're on a roll with Michael McNiven as our topic, let's keep it going.

Before the Christmas Break the question was raised,  and no doubt following the Christmas Break, the question will be posed; will the Attack trade Michael McNiven ?

The thought process is simple to follow; with Erie and London looking to run away in the West, there may be other teams leaguewide that would benefit from acquiring the OHL's best goalkeeper.

That's a great theory, but the potential for such a transaction is extremely thin in my view.

First, name all of the 17 teams that realistically could contend fully for the OHL title with Michael McNiven in their goal...... That number is pretty low, maybe 2 to 3 clubs in my view.

Next, name all the teams that would offer a " blow-your-socks-off " package to the Attack in exchange for McNiven.

That number might be even lower than the first proviso and keep in mind, as one General Manager who's been in both conferences once said of Dale DeGray, ' he's a hard guy to make a deal with. '

And finally, what if the Attack elect to stand pat both for the short term and the long term, holding out hope that goalie rich Montreal might leave McNiven at the Junior level for an overage year ?

All 3 scenarios are stretches, aren't they ?

I'm not saying it won't happen, but a lot of things would have to fall into place for Michael McNiven to be dispatched from Owen Sound.

I'm Fred Wallace
