McNiven Has Encountered Road Blocks Before

Length:

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire "

There's no doubt that being cut by Team Canada was a huge disappointment for Owen Sound Attack goalie Michael McNiven.

.....but was this the first time he's faced obstacles or opposition in his hockey career ?

Far from it.

As an underage netminder, McNiven was dispatched by the Attack back to Georgetown for more seasoning, which was a prudent move considering he excelled for the Raiders winning 21 times, 5 by shutout.

So he comes to Owen Sound the next year, wins 8 of his first 10 starts, goes 15 & 8 overall, but curiously fills the backup role behind Jack Flinn.

In my opinion, this move cost the Attack a 4th place finish, a playoff round and conceivably a $ 100,000 in revenue.

Somewhere in there, Michael McNiven went off to a Hockey Canada camp and the fallout was not positive; in fact he was bypassed for future international opportunities in favor of guys who can't fill his blocker.

Did I mention he went undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft before signing as a Free Agent invite by the Montreal Canadiens ?

And now this, cut by Hockey Canada from the National Junior Selection Camp.

Disappointing no doubt, but I'm willing to wager this motivates him once again, maybe more than anything that's transpired before, which is good for the Attack and probably even better in the long run for Michael McNiven.

I'm Fred Wallace
