Here's another reason why I fully support the new Recreational Center in Owen Sound.
For a second consecutive year, the South Central Triple " A " Hockey League is using Owen Sound as the host center for a year end tournament for one of their age categories.
A year ago, the SCTA Midget Championship Tournament with 10 teams was in the city and it was a highly, highly successful affair, even moreso because the host Grey Bruce Highlanders were one of the 2 teams to advance to the OMHA Final as a result of their success at the event.
This year, the SCTA returns with the Minor Bantam Division Championship weekend set for March 5th to the 7th.
I expect there will be the same number of teams, split into 2 pools, playing all day at both the Coliseum & the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Center on the Friday & Saturday, leading to 2 final games at the Lumley-Bayshore on the Sunday to determine who advances to the OMHA playdown.
Could you imagine if, and when, Owen Sound gets an additional ice surface as proposed in the Rec Center Complex.
The Highlanders and the city would have to consider a merger I'd think to potentially make the Complex the home of the Highlanders program.
And on a yearly basis, wouldn't it make sense for the SCTA to have a Championship weekend in one of their divisions in Owen Sound when they can stage most of affair in one building and then shift to the best facility within 90 miles for their finals games ?
I think so.
And that's why I'm excited about a new Rec Complex for Owen Sound.
