Selects Decision

By Fred Wallace

I know we did fastball yesterday, but today we want to do an update to alleviate any confusion that exists with the various levels of fastball teams under the Owen Sound Selects umbrella.

The Selects operate 3 clubs; the Brick Brothers Volkswagen Midget Selects, the Volkswagen Junior Selects and the Verge Investments Senior Selects.

All 3 are doing very well & that's created a dilemma.

The Midget Selects qualified for the Canadian Championships at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

The Junior Selects won the O.A.S.A. Elimination Tournament, which verified their qualification to host the Canadian Junior Championship Tournament in Owen Sound.

And the Verge Senior Selects played well this week against great competition and will try to qualify for the Canadian Men's Championship at the O.A.S.A.'s in Waterloo.

The problem with success ?

All of the tournaments are at virtually the same time, and in an organization as thin as the Selects, where coaches, managers, and players often crossover from entry to entry, who goes where ?

The decision made has President Bill Simpson & his pitching son Jamie going with the Midgets to Prince Albert.

In Ontario, Manager Lee Jacques and coach John Topash will start with the Senior Selects at Waterloo together, then Jacques will split back to Owen Sound for the Canadian Junior Championship Tournament in Owen Sound while Topash stays at Waterloo for the weekend.

It's not the best scenario, but it does represent rapid success for the Selects who have gone from one Midget team to 3 National contenders in a span of 2 years.
