NHL Draft This Weekend

By Fred Wallace

The National Hockey League Entry Draft is this weekend at Montreal.

From an Owen Sound standpoint, the most prominent name is netminder Scott Stajcer who is rated 5th among North American Draft eligible goalies.

Stajcer was rated as high as # 2 at midseason, but dipped down the stretch.

NHL Director of Central Scouting E.J. McGuire suggests that Stajcer's ranking may have slipped because he was the # 1 netminder for the Attack and more scouts had more opportunities to dissect and evaluate his strengths.

The Goaltending scout at CSB, Al Jenson, is firmly convinced that Stajcer will be an NHL calibre netminder.

The other Attack player expected to be drafted is Elmvale native Garrett Wilson.

Wilson impressed scouts with hard work and Central Scouting believes he can evolve into a prototypical power forward.

Two others with Attack connections are getting considerations.

There are those, far more connected than I, who suggest Attack captain David Kolomatis played his way into draft consideration with an AHL stint this spring.

E.J. McGuire isn't sold that Kolomatis will be drafted, but he does forsee plenty of options at the professional level for Kolomatis.

And virtually the same scenario exists for Sauble Beach native Lane MacDermid.

McGuire doesn't anticipate MacDermid will be drafted, but fully expects the former Attack forward will get a long look at an NHL camp in the fall.
