Woodsmen Rolling

By Fred Wallace

The long holiday weekend.

And from a local sporting standpoint.

There's plenty on the go.

The Auto Racing tracks at Sauble and at Varney hope to get their motors running full gear after being soaked and rained out last weekend.

Hanover Raceway, where the track cleared remarkably well last weekend, has another full card of harness racing tomorrow night.

And the Owen Sound Senior Selects Fastball team, after a 6 year absence, return to the ISC tomorrow with a doubleheader at Port Elgin against the Blue Devils at Lakeview Park.

Prior to all of that, tonight, in Senior Lacrosse, the Owen Sound van Dolder Home Team Woodsmen will try and extend their season opening win streak to 4 in a row when they travel to Fergus to meet the Wellington Dufferins.

For most of this decade, Owen Sound and the various entries out of Wellington County have been fierce rivals.

This spring, the oddsmakers are giving Owen Sound an overwhelming nod, considering the Dufferins are winless and the Woodsmen have been overwhelming in their 3 straight victories.

Granted, 2 of the three wins were against the same opponent, the Norwood Nitro, but still the league has to be wary of an Owen Sound entry who walloped the President's Cup hosting Ohsweken Warriors last Friday night 19-8 in a game that was far more one-sided than the final score indicated.

No team has won the President's Cup Canadian Senior Lacrosse Championship back to back since Fergus did it in the late 1980's.

The Owen Sound van Dolder Home Team Woodsmen have served notice they're intent on duplicating the feat.
