Public Hearing on Bruce Power PlansRegionalby Manny Paiva A victory for residents concerned about Bruce Power's plan to ship 16 steam generators to Sweden -- sort of. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has announced it will hold a one-day public hearing on September 29th in Ottawa. As Bayshore Broadcasting News first reported this week -- a group of residents called for a public hearing to examine Bruce Power's proposal. The nuclear company wants to ship 16 decommissioned steam generators from its plant on Lake Huron overland to Owen Sound and then by ship to Sweden for recycling. Resident Sharen Skelly argues the proposal creates a big risk for the Great Lakes. Skelly tells Bayshore Broadcasting News a public hearing will allow people to voice their concerns and possibly come up with alternatives. But they are calling on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to have two meetings -- one locally and one in Ottawa. The Commission has said the plan poses no risk to the public or the environment. But the commission says in light of the public concern -- a hearing will be held. The hearing will provide residents with an opportunity to participate as interveners and be heard before the Tribunal. Residents can also submit their concerns in writing. The Commission also told Owen Sound Council this week that it will not issue a licence to Bruce Power unless it is satisfied the shipment will be completed safely.
